Lutong Bahay: Lumpiang Tikoy with Cheese
Lutong Bahay will be a short tag on the title which I'll use to feature home-cooked food, either in our own home or at a friend's house.
First of all, Gong Xi Fa Cai and happy Chinese new year everyone! And to start this year of the black water dragon, our Chinese-Filipino family didn't miss stocking up on the traditional tsinoy favorite -- tikoy. (Guess we'll be eating tikoy for the whole month eh?)
Earlier this day, my mom already started preparing our tikoy. We usually eat them fried with egg. Today though, we wrapped pieces of brown tikoy in lumpia wrappers and tucked cheese inside. Deep fried them until golden brown, and they're all ready to be eaten.
They don't look really enticing, especially on photos, but they taste good. The slightly sweet flavor of the brown tikoy is taken up a notch by the creamy and salty melted cheese. It also has an interesting crispy on the outside but quite chewy on the inside texture.
Anyway, have a wonderful new year everyone. Not all of you are probably believers of Chinese astrology, but nonetheless, let's all have more love, peace, good health, wealth and tons of food trips this year of the black water dragon.

You know, it was only when I went to college in Manila that I learned that you have to fry the tikoy before eating them! Hahaha Back in Zamboanga, we just eat them from the box... Maybe that's a different kind of tikoy we have? The lumpia-wrapped tikoy is another execution that i've never heard of until now. Gotta try that some time :P
ReplyDeleteI've once eaten this Tikoy brought by one of my teachers in school. It's so tasty and even deliciously. I like it... :)
ReplyDelete@[pinkc00kies]: Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely try those, especially the one with mangoes since we have some in the house.. :)
ReplyDelete@michymichymoo: Haha.. If we see each soon, I'll give you a box ;)
@Mich of Mich Eats and Shops: I just learned yesterday that tikoy can be eaten straight from the box.. :) I guess we were just used to cooking tikoy in different ways 'cause it's quite hard to eat them as is. Sticky masyado.. XD
Kung Hei Fat Choi!! I love tikoy! :)
ReplyDeleteI am eating tikoy right now. I pan-fried two slices on a non-stick pan brushed with butter. Tamaditis. Deep frying looks too much of a hassle. Hehe
ReplyDeleteWow. I did not know I can eat tikoy raw. I'll try tomorrow. :D
ayay! miss na miss ko na ang tikoy! Happy Chinese New Year ganda!

I'll see if I can try doing that again when I cook the Tikoy I have at home.
