Daily Quickie: Selecta Magnum Classic & Almond
Daily Quickie is a short tag on the title which I use for blog entries about food I'm snacking at home, work or anywhere.
Selecta Magnum has hit the Philippines like a signal number 4 typhoon! On the television, on Facebook, in the blogsphere, and even in stores, there's always a tidbit about this famous premium ice cream bar. So although I was skeptical at first and thought that this might just be a common-tasting ice cream bar over hyped by the media, I finally gave in and decided to try it for myself.
Yesterday while in Trinoma, I dragged the beau along and decided to pay a trip to Landmark's supermarket just to get a flavor each of Selecta Magnum ice cream bar. Although there weren't many people flocking at Magnum's ice cream chiller, there were only 2 flavors available -- Magnum Classic (P50) and Magnum Almond (P50).
We first tried the Magnum Classic which is a vanilla ice cream bar coated with Belgian chocolate. I admit it was good. The chocolate coating was sweet, rich and had a beautiful crisp. However, the vanilla ice cream was nothing out of the ordinary. And for someone who've always had her dose of Belgian chocolates, the Magnum Classic was not that impressive.
Unlike the Magnum Classic though, the Magnum Almond is coated with almond-infused Belgian chocolate which is definitely lighter in taste. It was not as sweet as the Classic which made me enjoy it more, and it didn't only have a beautiful crisp, but also a nice crunch.
Overall, I'm not crazy over Selecta Magnum, but I definitely like it. I don't think I'll be buying a Classic variant any time soon, but it wouldn't hurt to eat a stick of the Magnum Almond from time to time. Given the chance, I'll try to sample Magnum Truffle too just to see which of the variants I like the most.
How about you, have you tried Magnum already? If yes, what's your favorite flavor? :)

so much hype over magnum, is it really good?
ReplyDeletei already tasted the plain and one with almonds...but found it just so-so...
@yuuki: I think sis if you're used to eating Belgian chocolates, then Magnum is just ordinary.. :)
ReplyDeletecan't waaaait to taste it too!!!!!! :))
ReplyDeleteI haven't tasted one sis! Ang dami ng reviews about it! Makahingi nga kay Abdel. lol
ReplyDeleteI really really recommend you try Picole. It's under the radar but 10x more delicious than Magnum. I only saw it at Rustan's Supermarket or Rustan's Fresh. I think they're the exclusive distributors.
ReplyDeleteIt's more expensive but is so worth the price.
I seriously don't get why people are so crazy about Magnum. I've had it, its good but not really all that different from other ice cream. From what I've heard the conversion to Php price it is just totally way up high the chain. I know it's a high end ice cream but it still is just another ice cream. It's more like we're all paying for the brand. Like starbucks, ben & jerrys, haagen's, etc. Just my opinion. :P
ReplyDeletewanna try it... but i can't.. we have the ben and jerry here... but still phil ice scream is the best... i love mango flavor... so with ice cream stick like magnum
ReplyDeleteEigroj Stain
Tried magnum classic and it's just ok. I like haagen's more but since it's too expensive, I'll just settle for magnum...heheh! Will try other variants next time. :)
ReplyDeleteblog hopping, found your blog through Anney. :)
I bought all 3 variants and ate it in one go hahahaha ...
ReplyDeletetried these 2 also and i loved almond! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the Truffle flavor too. Ahhh, maybe next time they'll have it available already. I only got to try to the Almond one and I found it too sweet. But it was good. I liked how the coating didn't fall off so easily once you start biting into it.
ReplyDeletethere is really this fuss about Magnum.. hmm., i should give it a try
ReplyDeleteWhen were done distributing the 112 school supplies in a remote barangay that was just flooded during Sendong. We had this little ice cream party. I saw this magnum ice cream and it didn't entice me...I guess it is just a new ice cream and nothing else but new taste --- so we had another one instead of tasting this.
ReplyDeletemagnum is getting viral over the blogosphere..pero ako nlng ata ang inde pa nakakakain nito..hahaha..poor me!
ReplyDeletestill haven't tried Magnum yet.. though really intrigued about the hype it's getting.. would love to try the truffle! :)
ReplyDeleteMagnum seems to be the hype in the Philippines ha? :)
ReplyDeleteIt's been available in Singapore for the past couple of years. I tried it once. It's not too bad. :)
Haven't tried it pa. Does it taste like the ordinary one or there's something different that i must try it pronto? :D haha Sa ibang country hindi selecta, streets ang name :))
ReplyDeleteI'm a super duper late bloomer. Still haven't tried it. :(

Love the almond.. Madami nga ngsasabi na nothing really special about the classic.. Haven't tried the truffle though..
ReplyDeleteWhat I really like on Magnum lang is the cracking coating. XD Ice cream not much because there's nothing too note worthy about it.

It's good, but I do think it's a bit too overhyped. :) I love the magnum almond though, but didn't enjoy the choco truffle flavor... way too sweet.
ReplyDeleteTaste's Intentions
@Rae: I know Picolé! :D There's actually a Picolé stall in SM MOA and I've loved their ice pops ever since I've tried them.
ReplyDelete@Angela Ricardo: Yeah, I definitely agree.. :)
@lalalaPatricia: There's really nothing special about Magnum so don't worry.. ;) It's good, like most ice cream bars are :)
hehe Magnum! I like the classic and the almonds. I just don't like the price. haha
ReplyDeleteI love Magnum Almond. Hey, Php50 lang? Bat 60 yung nabibili ko?? :(
ReplyDelete@Miss `Chievous: I think it's priced at P60 if bought from 7-11 and other retail stores. It's P50 lang 'pag from the supermarket :)
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing Magnum on FB. I really want to try it.:)
ReplyDeletehaven't tried it, their marketing are successful
ReplyDeletei haven't succumbed to the dark side of buying this. :o thanks for sharing! :>
ReplyDeletewhen it comes to icecream, it's the kids who knew and have a say on what flavors to buy. even the cornetto disk, in all honesty, i haven't tried, becuase its the kids who grabbed at the store while i am left by the cashier...
ReplyDeletemy teen daughter's the one who spoils me the story about the craze:)
I haven't tried this. I haven't given in to the temptation. It's all because of my being not a sweet tooth. Haha! But would want to try just for the sake of trying :P
ReplyDeleteI will only eat this when somebody would give it to me for free. Hahaha!

ReplyDeletefunny coz we have the same post...lol here's mine http://www.germeline.info/video-2/magnum-selecta-ice-cream-stick
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised na ngayon lang nagka Magnum sa Pinas. I must admit it's really something because of the Belgian chocolate coating but I'm not really enchanted with it. Maybe because it's just an ordinary street ice cream here.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's going crazy about Selecta Magnum. I think I should give it a try, too. =)
ReplyDeleteI saw the magnum at the grocery today .they only have the classic flavor ,in one papack(3 yata ang laman?? small size at the price of $3 something(mahal) but i changed my mind instead ,i got the blue bell dutch chocolate ice cream 1/2 galloon for only $5 plus.
ReplyDeleteNot yet :-( I am not feeling well the past few days e. I hope to try the Magnum Almond one of this days. Your photos are so nice-as always! Keep up the good work Sumi.
ReplyDeleteI just like the coating! :) Try the Truffles...
ReplyDeleteI've read about Magnum on FBW at least 3 times - twice maybe on your link and I am crazy about it. I wanna try it now.drool!!

ReplyDeletei've tasted it na sis.. chika lng siya.
ReplyDeleteWill try it later.
ReplyDeletenot a fan. taste ordinary for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll go for a Sebastian's Dive Bar instead. Magnum is overrated; too much ado about nothing.
ReplyDeletetry to buy in mini stop and 711 but it's out of stock ..is that mean that's really magnum is good? =)
ReplyDeleteThis has been such a hype there in Pinas...overflooding twitter endorsement by celebs..but nahhh....it won't sell on me...hahahaha..But I am sure for the lovers of ice cream no wonder it'll be a big hit.
ReplyDeleteI have lost my appetite lately but have discovered Magnum classic and it has returned.
ReplyDeletei already tried that. super sikat na yan dito sa pinas. kakain lng nyan lagi may picture. hehe gnun na ang uso ngayon e.
ReplyDeletethese two are actually my favorites.. i love the belgian chocolate Magnum has to offer. I just wished the strawberry flavor available with the other countries will also be made available here in the philippines. :)
