Mother's Crepe and Cafe: Crepes and More by Mazazu
Even after a heavy meal, when it comes to desserts, I certainly won't pass. So after a very filling Jawbreaker session at Zark's Burgers, my friends and I didn't hesitate to try out the sweet treats at the newly-opened Mother's Crepe and Cafe in SM Mall of Asia.
Originating from Japan, Mother's Crepe and Cafe also known as Mazazu Crepe in Hong Kong, Singapore and other countries, is finally in the Philippines to bring us delicious yet healthy sweet delights that reflect a mother's wish for her child's well-being. Although crepes and other sweet desserts are usually considered unhealthy, and high in fat and cholesterol, Mother's Crepe and Cafe deviates itself as its crepe mix has flour mixed with bran which is high in dietary fiber. Its light and low-fat special whip cream also contains only 26% of vegetable fat which makes Mazazu's crepes generally healthier.
Located in SM Mall of Asia's Entertainment Mall, just a unit away from Chatime, Mother's Crepe and Cafe has a small lounging space and a store with an enticing plastic display of its colorful crepes, coffee, tea concoctions, milk teas and smoothies.
And despite Mother's Crepe and Cafe's limited space, I was impressed at how it offers a wide selection of not just crepes for desserts, but also delica or savory crepes, along with a variety of beverages. Just look at their extensive menu! (Click image to enlarge.)
It was actually quite a challenge to choose which crepes to try, especially with a selection as wide as Mother's Crepe and Cafe's. Fortunately though, owner Mrs. Adeline Ong-Santiago was there to recommend us which ones we shouldn't miss trying out.
The Food
After browsing the menu for a couple more times and watching the crepe lady make and assemble our crepes, it was finally time to sample the sweet yet healthy goodies. And first we had was the Strawberry & Banana (P155) from the Premium Crepes line, a treat filled with slices of strawberries and bananas with a dollop of whip cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup, wrapped in a soft and creamy-tasting crepe.
We then had the Caramel Strawberry Cheesecake Soft (P255) from the Ice Crepe line, a bundle of strawberry slices, whip cream, caramel syrup, a scoop of Hokkaido's soft-serve vanilla ice cream and a chunk of the owner's home-made cheesecake. Although I personally have low tolerance for sweets, I didn't find this treat overbearing. The sweetness of the whip cream with the ice cream was just right, and the cheesecake was the bomb! It was one of the best ones I've had so far, sweet, slightly tangy and creamy. I just wish they'd offer this treat by slice and by whole in the future.
Although the crepes are served in a coned form, one can also order a serving on a plate like the Almond Choco Banana (P125) we sampled from the Deluxe Crepe line. And as the name suggests, this treat has bananas and almonds, whip cream and chocolate syrup. I honestly love the combination of choco, banana and almonds, so this definitely satisfied my craving. However, I think I would've enjoyed this better if eaten in a cone.
From the Delica Crepe line, we got to try the Ham & Egg (P130), an ensemble of ham, egg slices and mayonnaise rolled in lettuce leaves and wrapped in the bran-infused crepe. This savory treat definitely felt like a breakfast item for me. And while I am a fan of ham, I found the egg slices more interesting. Mrs. Santiago told us that they use a Japanese technology in cooking the eggs to make the yellow-orange yolk creamier and tastier. Now, if only my mom can cook our boiled eggs this way, I'd be a happier girl.
Aside from the crepes, we also tried the Raw Milk Vanilla (Cup P120; Cone P100) from the choices of Hokkaido Soft Cream. Unlike other soft serves, Hokkaido's is known for its creamier taste and velvety texture. And even though I haven't been to Japan yet, I can say that this cup doesn't disappoint. However, this 6oz. serving can be a little too sweet and pricey for one person, so better share it with a friend or your special someone.
The Drinks
Beverage selection at Mother's Crepe and Cafe is as wide as their crepes' so it'll be a shame if we wouldn't be able to try some. So here are the drinks we've got to sample, both to quench our thirst and to satisfy our sweet tooth as well.
For soda and tapioca lovers, there's Melon Soda (12oz. P75; 16oz. P85) which doesn't only oozes with bubbly melon flavors, but also has soft and chewy tapioca pearls at the bottom. Then, there's also the Orange Float (12oz. P85; 16oz. P95), a refreshing orange fizz beverage with a scoop of Hokkaido soft-serve on top.
There's also the unconventional Green Tea Smoothie (16oz. P95), a refreshing blend of sweet, creamy yet distinctly green tea beverage. As for milk tea lovers like me, there's the Milk Tea (12oz. P75; 16oz. P85) which has a creamy, slightly sweet and clean tea-tasting flavor with soft and delightfully chewy tapioca pearls at the bottom.
The Jasmine Green Tea with Cream Cheese (12oz. P80; 16oz. P90) won't disappoint tea lovers as well as this glass is very refreshing and has a clean-tasting and extremely aromatic Jasmine flavor beneath the sweet, salty and creamy layer. And for coffee lovers, Mother's Crepe and Cafe also has something for you, hot and iced concoctions of Japan's famous Key Coffee. For this trip, the coffee-lover beau tried the Caramel Latte (8oz. P85; 12oz. P95), a creamy and bittersweet blend with a hint of caramel.
THE VERDICT
Although Mother's Crepe and Cafe is quite new in the market, I have a good feeling that this one-stop-crepe-and-drinks-shop will attract a lot of sweets and beverage lovers in the Metro. With good quality items and an extensive menu, there's just something for everyone. So even if the beau isn't a big crepe fan, he can always enjoy a good cup of coffee or a refreshing smoothie while I enjoy a serving of crepe and some tea or milk tea.
