Epicurean Cakes: A Taste of Sweet Pleasures
Whenever I eat out, I always make sure to save some room for desserts. Whether it's ice cream, flan, shaved ice, cake or any other sweet treat, you won't catch me saying no, except when I'm seriously sick. So when I received an invitation to sample some of the creations of Epicurean Cakes, I just knew I shouldn't miss this sweet opportunity.
Epicurean Cakes is a new and upcoming pastry store offering cupcakes and other confectionery to satisfy every epicurean, a person devoted to sensual enjoyment from fine food and drink. And although Epicurean Cakes hasn't been officially launched yet, just the promise of sweet epicurean pleasures got me all happy and giddy inside.
I got to meet with the nice Ms. Kim from Epicurean Cakes who personally handed me a box of six cupcakes. Even with just looking at these treats from outside the box, I could really see that these are no hurriedly-made desserts but sweet delights made with love and hard work. And upon unboxing them, it was truly a cupcake love at first sight.
From my box of cupcakes, I first got to try the Red Velvet -- a moist velvety cake with a beautiful deep red color, a hint of cocoa, a rich cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate surprise inside. Even at first glance, you can already tell that this sweet treat was meticulously made. The frosting is nicely placed on the cupcake and is even decorated with dragées. As for the taste, this seriously tops my book, surpassing even the red velvet cupcake from Sonja's. While I've had my fair share of equally moist cupcakes, I was impressed by how rich and creamy the base cake tasted. The cream cheese frosting also has a harmonious blend of sweetness and tang without being over the top.
I also got a bite off The Mad Rabbit -- a carrot cupcake with an epicurean twist topped with a cream cheese frosting and an almond décor. While I seriously fell in love with the first cupcake, this one made it harder for me to choose my favorite. While I'm not really too fond of carrot cakes, I was spellbound at first bite. The carrot cupcake is super moist with bits of nuts for an added crunch. The cream cheese frosting which wasn't too sweet or too tangy for my palate also made for a lovely icing to an already delightful cake.
After getting a taste of two of Epicurean Cakes' creations, I was left very impressed and eager to wait till they sell these babies out in the market. But of course, my cupcake love story doesn't stop right here. I was even more at awe when I found out that these sweet treats will be selling for an introductory price of only P35 apiece -- almost half of the selling price of most cupcakes in the Metro. Now, that's a really sweet deal!
Aside from these two wonderful flavors, Epicurean Cakes will also be offering Oreo S'mores Overload, Kitkat Choco Swirl and Campfire Madness flavors. They'll also be accepting made-to-order customized cupcakes and cakes.
Although I've already had my fair share of cupcakes, this is the first time I've been truly and greatly impressed. Epicurean Cakes may be a newcomer in the continuously-growing competition for the title of best cupcakes in town, but I can assure you that treats from this upcoming store is definitely fit for an epicurean minus the hefty price tag. So cupcake lovers, why not give Epicurean Cakes a taste when their goodies become readily available? I know I won't miss that chance!
