The Sandwich Guy: Hexagon Sandwiches and More
Even as a food blogger, I'm still conscious with what I eat. Although you can assume I stuff a lot of carbs, meats and sweets in my system, most of the time, I just want light yet satisfying meals. And fortunately, we've spotted The Sandwich Guy in SM North EDSA The Block one evening last week when I was craving for a fresh and healthy sandwich.
The beau and I have always seen The Sandwich Guy's kiosk in SM The Block's third level. However, it wasn't until recently that we've finally given it a try. And even though this dining spot takes the form of a booth, we love how its space looked bright, engaging, cozy and even donned with hexagons from the stall itself, up to its tables and chairs.
While surprisingly, there have already been a lot of sandwich places around, I was so glad to find out that The Sandwich Guy offers freshly-prepared healthy sandwiches made from whole wheat breads. And like the most prominent theme in the store, its sandwich treats are also in the shape of hexagons. Now, how's that for being cohesive?
The Sandwich Guy offers several kinds of sandwiches to suit varying tastes. And while I would've ordered a more unique sandwich flavor, I opted to get the HBLT (P95) instead to see how one of their most basic sandwiches fares. HBLT stands for ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato, with a bonus of cheese and a dollop of mayo sandwiched between two slices of TSG's house-baked hexagon whole wheat bread.
For such a healthy ensemble, I found my HBLT sandwich to be good. Every component tasted as how it should be, and I simply loved their freshly-grilled bread. The size is also big compared to your usual square sandwich that I ended up only finishing one half, and getting the other half for take away. I guess my only complaint would be their generosity on the mayo. Some may find the amount of mayo just right, but unfortunately, I'm not really a mayonnaise person unless it's Japanese mayo.
The beau initially ordered for the Pesto (P80) but we were told that they already ran out of pasta, so he just opted to try the Mushy Bacon (P100) instead. Unlike my choice of sandwich, his was sinful despite having the same hexagon slices of whole wheat bread. It had bacon, beef and mushrooms drenched with gooey melted cheese. Honestly, I prefer this sandwich over my straight-forward HBLT for the mushroom overload and the savory cheese. Oh, and the beau finished his sandwich so it was definitely a good sign.
We also ordered a serving of the Cheesy Bacon Baked Potato (P95) as a side dish to our sandwiches. I know, I know, this seems a little sinful because of all the cheese sauce and bacon bits over the marble potatoes. But since it had all three of my favorite food items -- potatoes, bacon and cheese, I just had to oblige and go order it.
I had no regrets whatsoever though as this Cheesy Bacon Baked Potato is really good despite being so simple and straight-forward. The marble potatoes were also cooked perfectly -- firm without being too tough, and moist without being too soft and mushy. However, since the beau isn't really a big fan of potatoes, I gladly opted to take home the rest of the dish which my little sis and I shared and enjoyed.
THE VERDICT
While there's no doubt I prefer more sinful food items, it's good to grab a freshly-made sandwich from The Sandwich Guy once in a while. Whether you'd like an all-vegetable ensemble, an all-meat treat, or something in between, there's a sandwich for you at TSG. They also have salads, baked potatoes and pasta dishes on the menu which are available at friendly prices. And aside from good, healthy food, affordability, and a nice overall appeal, I really like that TSG serves their sandwiches wrapped in wax paper and their other items in microwavable plastic containers, making it convenient for take away.
