Lia's Cakes in Season: Avocado Cake and More at Kapitolyo
Remember The Foodies Circle's trip to Nav Modern Thai Cuisine? If you've been a long-time reader, you'd know that we'll never leave a restaurant without trying out their desserts. However, for our pre-Christmas get-together dinner, we decided to skip the sweet treats at the Thai food spot. It wasn't done in vain though as we visited a famous cake shop in a nearby area at Kapitolyo -- Lia's Cakes in Season, to get our dessert fix.
For almost a year now, I have read nothing but praises for Lia's Cakes in Season. Almost every blog I've stumbled upon had been raving about their avocado cake. So for our foodie group, paying a trip to Lia's Cakes in Season was a unanimous decision.
It was already late when we got to the store. I'd say it was a little past 10PM. And in all honesty, I thought the staff at Lia's Cakes in Season wouldn't welcome us anymore. But to my surprise, we were still gladly accommodated in the slightly dim and warmly-lit purple and green-donned cake shop. And take note, they welcomed us with a smile.
Even if it was already late, there were still a lot of pretty cakes displayed on their chiller. Each and every creation looked so enticing that it gave us a hard time deciding which ones to order. If only calories don't exist, we would've gotten a slice of all their available cakes! In the end though, we decided to go for the bestsellers and their newest offering.
Our first treat was the Avocado Cake (P85) which is what this cake shop has been known for. This light green slice has a soft chiffon base with creamy avocado filling and icing, topped with pistachios. While I like that this is far from being overly sweet, I think I would've liked a little more of the avocado flavor since it was quite mellow for my palate. The chiffon was slightly dry too. Maybe it has been sitting in the fridge for too long?
Now, their Strawberry Cheesecake (P95) definitely got us going! It was flavorful and had a lovely blend of strawberries and cream cheese. It also had strawberry preserve which added texture and more tang. Actually, even the crust was note-worthy as it was my kind of a cheesecake crust -- sweet, a little chewy and holds well together. Among the cakes we've had, this was a personal favorite, and it literally just disappeared in a few minutes!
The last slice we had was of the Almond Lychee Cake (P60). From what I know, this is a new flavor which Lia's Cakes in Season started offering for the holidays. I'm not so sure if it's still available now, but this is quite good especially for the hardcore almond-lychee lovers. (This might throw off non-almond lychee fans though.) Similar to the Avocado Cake, I've noticed that the chocolate chiffon had already dried out a little. Good thing it was tasty enough and had an almond-lychee cream to pimp up the ensemble.
For some take-home snack, we bought a box of the Fruity Polvoron (P110) which had twelve pieces of coin-shaped, pale brown crumbly treats infused with candied dayap (lime) rinds. As a polvoron lover, I'd say this rendition from Lia's Cakes in Season is quite good. I loved how the polvoron was buttery without being too sweet. The candied dayap also added not just some sweetness and tang, but even an interesting chewy texture which made munching every piece of polvoron more enjoyable.
Anyway, here's another photo of us, The Foodies Circle girls, just outside the cake shop. We left Lia's Cakes in Season at about 11PM already and it was really nice of their staff to have made us feel at ease. They didn't give us the stare nor have indirectly forced us to finish our cakes faster, unlike in some restaurants where they'd annoy you to leave.
THE VERDICT
Our visit to Lia's Cakes in Season was memorable mostly because of the company and not solely because of the cakes. While I really loved the Strawberry Cheesecake, I was a little disappointed that the always-raved Avocado Cake didn't live up to my expectation. I'm not sure if I've set the standard so high, or if the cake really dried out for staying in the chiller for so long. Nonetheless, I'm pretty happy with the experience and will definitely come back to Lia's Cakes in Season to try the Avocado Cake for a second time.

P.S. what is the green flavor in the middle of the strawberry cheese cake? It's such a colorful slice =)
