Sophie's Mom: Delightful Cupcakes in SM North The Block
Being a lover of almost anything and everything confectionery, especially cupcakes, I've found myself excited in trying out stores and flavors that I haven't had before. So when I spotted a Sophie's Mom kiosk in SM North EDSA The Block, I didn't even spend a second of hesitance, and went straight to check out their cupcake offerings on display.
There were less cupcake flavors available that day than what I've hoped for. However, that didn't stop my excitement. There might not be a lot of variety to choose from, but if the cupcakes were good enough taste-wise, then that's good enough for me. And since the selection was quite limited, it didn't take me too long to decide which ones to get.
Oh, although that rainbow-colored cupcake looks very interesting, I didn't get a piece since it turns out to just be vanilla-flavored. I may like vanilla in general, but I was more excited to try out the more elaborate-flavored cupcake creations from Sophie's Mom.
I only got to try 3 flavors, and my most favorite would be the Green Tea Cupcake (P70). For a regular-sized cupcake, the price is actually quite steep. (Sonja's is still more expensive though.) However, I found this cupcake flavor really interesting. It's described as almost flourless with a green tea-flavored base cake that's filled with cream and topped with smooth-whipped white chocolate-green tea ganache. The cupcake itself may not be as moist as I wanted, but the filling and topping were just delicious! No, no, it was divine! I never thought white chocolate and green tea would taste so amazing together.
The second on my list is the Red Velvet Cupcake (P60) which is their bestseller. The first time I tasted this cupcake, I fell in love. The base cake was soft and moist, filled with chocolate bits that add texture and an element of surprise. And while the frosting may look like it was just dumped on there, it was my favorite part of the cupcake. Unlike most cream cheese frosting, Sophie's Mom was creamier. I couldn't even consider it as a frosting 'cause it seemed more like just cream cheese. So although a friend didn't like it, I loved it as it blended so nicely with the cupcake, plus I'm a big cream cheese fan.
However, I have to note though that I didn't have the same amazing experience on my second purchase of the Red Velvet Cupcake. It still tasted good, but the cream cheese frosting was denser and more frosting-like. (That's why this just ranked second.)
The third flavor I got to try was the Banana Walnut Cupcake (P60) which has walnut chunks inside and is topped with chocolate ganache. While this cupcake wasn't not that bad, it wasn't my cup of cake. (I guess the flavor was too tamed for me.) The banana walnut base cake was soft and moist and tasted similar to a banana bread. The chocolate ganache on the other hand, added it's much needed sweetness and richness.
THE VERDICT
While I'm trying to lessen my sugar consumption, I don't think I can ever cut back on eating cupcakes since I've gotten a new-found favorite -- Sophie's Mom's Green Tea Cupcake. For the quality of Sophie's Mom's treats, I can say their goods are fairly priced. The ones I've tried were not overly sweet too. I just hope the next time I buy from their SM North The Block kiosk, the staff would be friendlier. Anyway, I hope to visit their main branch soon -- their Homestyle Bakery and Confectionery in San Antonio Village, Makati.
